Wine routes in\nMaremma<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Maremma has three wine routes: Hills of\nMaremma Wine and Tastes Route, Monteregio di Massa Marittima Wine and Tastes\nRoute, Montecucco Wine Route and Tastes of Amiata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following these itineraries, you will discover\nfood and wine traditions of the Maremma region. Wine Routes are real journeys through\nthe territory to highlight top-quality local products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hills of Maremma Wine and Tastes Route touches thirteen Maremma municipalities including Capalbio. The Wine Route crosses some cities of this area, such as Scansano where the famous Morellino DOCG wine is produced and Pitigliano, where you\u2019ll find the fresh Bianco DOC wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mild climate and its excellent terroir\nmake Maremma the ideal territory for the production of mineral wines with a\ngreat character. In this area, wine farmers\u2019 and enologists\u2019 far-sightedness have\ncaused Capalbio wines to grow in quality\nand fame over time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1999, after a story going on for more\nthan one year, the wine named \u2018Capalbio\u2019 was acknowledged as D.O.C. (Denomination\nof Controlled Origin). This acknowledgement is not only a guarantee for consumers\nas to the wine\u2019s quality but also promotes excellent\nand typical products<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maremma\u2019s saffron<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Historically, saffron origins from Greece\nand Middle East: it used to be called \u2018red gold\u2019 due to its very expensive\ncost. Saffron is not only known as a spice but also as a medicine and a dye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It takes from 120000 to 150000 flowers to\nget 1 kilogram of stigmas (pistils). Their harvest cannot be sped up or\nmechanized and it must be carried out by hand and by experts, just like the\ndrying process and packaging, otherwise the product might be damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saffron in Maremma was already produced in\nthe Middle Ages. This spice was reportedly harvested and used mainly for fabric\ndying purposes: for example, traces of a red color has been found in ancient\nroman pools located at Pieve Vecchia in Campagnatico. There is also proof of\nsaffron\u2019s production and harvest in other areas of Maremma\u2019s territory like\nMontecucco and Pari: a writing that dates back to 1300\u2019s says \u201chere a unique\nand autochthonous saffron was cultivated\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
